Rhododendron maximum 'Kalamity' is a Diploid
Dr. João Loureiro, Dr. Silvia Castro, José Cerca, and Mariana Castro
Plant Ecology and Evolution Group,
Centre for Functional Ecology,
Department of Life Sciences,
Faculty of Science and Technology,
University of Coimbra, Portugal.
Rhododendron maximum 'Kalamity', which was found growing native in North Carolina, is a maximum that by initial appearances could pass for a Kalmia latifolia. At the Arnold Arboretum, 'Kalamity' is planted among the Kalmia latifolia and blends in so well most visitors to the Arnold fail to notice it despite being planted in the front row along a major pathway.
Rhododendron maximum 'Kalamity' was originally documented as a cross between Rhododendron maximum X Kalmia latifolia. However DNA research by Grant, Toomey, and Culham has clearly shown that 'Kalamity' is merely an odd looking Rhododendron maximum having the "normal" DNA associated with the species Rhododendron maximum.

Dr. João Loureiro, Dr. Silvia Castro, José Cerca, and Mariana Castro
Plant Ecology and Evolution Group,
Centre for Functional Ecology,
Department of Life Sciences,
Faculty of Science and Technology,
University of Coimbra, Portugal.
'Chattooga', found near the Chattooga River which forms the boundary between South Carolina and Georgia, is a natural hybrid of Rhododendron calendulaceum. 'Chattooga' is both seed and pollen fertile.
Audra State Park in West Virginia also contains natural hybrids of Rhododendron calendulaceum. Such natural hybrids occur when tetraploid and diploid deciduous azalea species, blooming at the same time, coexist.

Dr. João Loureiro, Dr. Silvia Castro, José Cerca, and Mariana Castro
Plant Ecology and Evolution Group
Centre for Functional Ecology
Department of Life Sciences,
Faculty of Science and Technology,
University of Coimbra.
John and Sally Perkins used Rhododendron calendulaceum 'Cherokee' as the seed parent in testing their conjecture that tetraploid deciduous azalea species normally reject pollen from diploid deciduous azaleas. Their test indicated that in all 5 cases where tetraploid pollen was placed on 'Cherokee' large seedpods were produced whereas in all 13 cases where diploid was placed on 'Cherokee' no seedpods were produced. This result was completely consistent with results the Perkins had experienced previously when working with other tetraploid deciduous azaleas as seed parents.
John and Sally Perkins have shown that diploid deciduous azalea do accept pollen from both diploid and tetraploid deciduous azaleas.

'Trude Webster' is a Tetraploid
Dr. João Loureiro, Dr. Silvia Castro, José Cerca, and Mariana Castro
Plant Ecology and Evolution Group,
Centre for Functional Ecology,
Department of Life Sciences,
Faculty of Science and Technology,
University of Coimbra, Portugal.
The hybridization work of Jim Barlup indicates that 'Trude Webster' is fertile in both directions when crossed with known and suspected polyploid elepidotes.
'Countess of Derby', which was determined to be a tetraploid, is the documented pollen parent of 'Anna Rose Whitney', which has been determined to be a triploid by the Coimbra based research team.
'Pink Pearl', which is the documented seed parent of 'Countess of Derby', was also determined to be a triploid by the Coimbra based research team.
'Cynthia', which is the documented pollen parent of 'Countess of Derby', was also determined to be a triploid by the Coimbra based research team.
The findings of the Coimbra based research team indicate 6 multi generational polyploid branches starting with the triploid 'Broughtonii', namely 1)'Broughtonii', 'Pink Pearl', 'Gomer Waterer', and 'Phyllis Korn', 2)'Broughtonii', 'Pink Pearl', 'Cynthia', 'Countess of Derby', and 'Anna Rose Whitney', 3)'Broughtonii', 'Pink Pearl', 'Cynthia', 'Countess of Derby', and 'Van',
4)'Broughtonii', 'Pink Pearl', 'Cynthia', 'Countess of Derby', and 'Lucky Strike',

'Anna Rose Whitney' is a Fertile Triploid
Dr. João Loureiro, Dr. Silvia Castro, José Cerca, and Mariana Castro
Plant Ecology and Evolution Group,
Centre for Functional Ecology,
Department of Life Sciences,
Faculty of Science and Technology,
University of Coimbra, Portugal.
'Anna Rose Whitney', which has 'Broughtonii', 'Pink Pearl', and 'Countess of Derby'
as ancestors, is the pollen parent of 'Hurricane'; however, like many (semi)fertile triploids 'Anna Rose Whitney' is reluctant to produce viable seedlings as either a seed or pollen parent.
In the case of triploid 'Anna Rose Whitney', a suspected diploid crossed with a tetraploid produced a triploid indicating that normal reduced meiosis most likely occurred for both parents. In other words, 'Anna Rose Whitney' having 39 chromosomes received 13 chromosomes from the suspected diploid R. griersonianum and 26 chromosomes from the tetraploid 'Countess of Derby'.

University of Coimbra.
'Pink Pearl' is sometimes referred to as the first commercially successful Rhododendron.
Other flow cytometry results from this research team include the following
'Broughtonii', the documented pollen parent of 'Pink Pearl', is a triploid.
'Antoon van Welie', which has 'Pink Pearl' as a documented seed parent, is a tetraploid.
'Gomer Waterer', which has 'Pink Pearl' as a documented pollen parent, is a
triploid.
'Graf Zeppelin', which has 'Pink Pearl' as a documented seed parent, is a
diploid.
'J.G. Millais', which has 'Pink Pearl' as a documented pollen parent, is a diploid.
'Topsvoort Pearl', which is documented sport of 'Pink Pearl', is a triploid.
'Ebony Pearl', which is documented sport of 'Pink Pearl', is a triploid.
'Mother of Pearl', which is a documented sport of 'Pink Pearl', is a diploid.
'Phyllis Korn', which has 'Gomer Waterer' as a document pollen parent, is a triploid.

'Trude Webster', which is documented as 'Countess of Derby' selfed, is a tetraploid.
'Diane', which is documented as the seed parent of 'Phyllis Korn', is a diploid.
'Summer Peach', which has 'Phyllis Korn' as a documented pollen parent, is a diploid.
'Summer Wind' and 'Peach Recital', which have 'Summer Peach' as a documented pollen parent, are a diploids.
Seedlings of Jim Barlup's cross of 'Phyllis Korn' by 'Trude Webster' have been determined to be pentaploids.
These results from the researchers at the University of Coimbra indicate 4 generations of fertile triploids, that triploids can produce diploid, triploid, tetraploid, and pentaploid offspring, and sports of triploids can be both ploidy stable and ploidy unstable.

'Rwain' is a Fertile Triploid
Dr. João Loureiro, Dr. Silvia Castro, José Cerca, and Mariana Castro
Plant Ecology and Evolution Group,
Centre for Functional Ecology,
Department of Life Sciences,
Faculty of Science and Technology,
University of Coimbra, Portugal.
The University of Coimbra research team also determined the Colombel cross of 'Horizon Monarch' by 'Rwain' produced a triploid and 3 tetraploids, 'Hotei' x 'Rwain' produced a triploid, the Colombel cross of 'Rwain' X 'L'Engin' produced 4 tetraploids, and the Colombel cross of 'Naselle' X 'Rwain' produced a diploid.
Thus, 'Rwain' is a seed and pollen fertile triplod capable of producing offspring that are diploids, triploids, and tetraploids. Although 'Rwain' is fertile, crosses involving 'Rwain' normally produce very few viable seeds.
These findings suggest that for the genus Rhododendrons triploids may provide a path for the exchange of generic material between diploids and tetraploids. To date the evidence suggesting a flow from diploid to tetraploid is much stronger than the evidence for a path from tetraploid to diploid.
Uneven bell curve splitting of fertile triploids allowing triploids to act as a donor of 1x or 2x gametes is demonstrated to occur in the research done in the thirties by Dr. Cyril Dean Darlington and in the nineties by Dr. Justin Ramsey.
These findings are consistent with the observations that Jim Barlup and Marc Colombel made when working with suspected polyploid elepidotes and the rules of engagement of John and Sally Perkins when working with deciduous azaleas.
'Lem's Monarch' and 'Horizon Monarch' have been determined to be tetraploids using flow cytometry by Dr. Thomas Ranney, J.R. Jones, and Nathan Lynch.
