Open Dates - 5/26 & 27         10 AM to 4 PM

Garden Description - We have 1.2 acres turned into garden. Twenty-eight years ago we planted a rhododendron hedge and started a vegetable garden and home orchard. The vegetable garden expanded, and more perennial beds were added, but it took membership in the ARS & children growing up (no more sports events to attend) to encourage us to expand the garden into more parts of the yard.  When we decided to install deer fencing, the clearing of all periphery shrubs opened up even more areas to populate with chosen plants. We are planting Rhodies: new hybrids, species, and discovered plants we coveted by visiting other's gardens. Come see, comment, and recommend.

Directions -  From rte 128, go west on rte 117, cross RR tracks, go past Drumlin Farm and Mass Audubon headquarters. Turn left onto Lincoln Rd. at end of Drumlin Field. Long Meadow Rd, is first left. Our house is second on the right (#7)

Plant Sale and Flower Show at Elm Bank

Those in charge of the various activities at the May 19 and 20 Plant Sale and Flower Show at Elm Bank are to be congratulated for a well run weekend of events. Both the flower show and plant sale gave the public the opportunity to experience the wonder of the genus Rhododendron and the knowledge and experience of the members of the American Rhododendron Society Massachusetts Chapter.

Although more work is still needed to better integrate our activities into those of Society Row, the efforts by all members involved in this event made for a very successful and enjoyable event.

Sally and I want to especially thank all of those who helped at the plant sale. It is amazing how many members of the chapter just know how to make positive things happen at such an event.

2. Truss Show

We will have a tutorial for novice exhibitors this year, starting at 12 pm on Saturday, May 19.  A couple of kindly and very knowledgeable chapter members will be on hand to advise and coach novice or nervous exhibitors at the show.  Sage encouragement about which trusses to enter, how to clean and prepare them, and help filling out the registration forms will be given.  This is an easy way to  learn how to enter your trusses.  Bring lots of blooms, even if you are not sure about them.  Don't forget, we have a trophy just for Best Novice Entry.

We have 3 new trophies this year to encourage a greater number and variety of entries:

Best Non-elepidote Species (including azalea species).  Bring in your less showy or quirkier species for this trophy.

Best Proven Performer Trophy, for the best plant from our Proven Performer list .  To find the whole list click on the 'pictorial tour of Proven Performers' on the chapter home page.

Outstanding Achievement Award, a $100 trophy for the person who wins the most blue ribbons (and reds).  This award is for the greatest number of excellent entries, very different than Best In Show, which recognizes the single, most perfect truss.

3. Plant Sale

Sunday May 20 we will have a fine selection of rhododendrons, azaleas, small trees and companion plants for sale ranging from small, inexpensive P4M and Van Veen plants up to fairly large-sized plants.  Included will be both species and hybrid rhododendrons, some smaller, more affordable selections from Weston Nurseries, choice perennials, and blooming landscape-sized rhododendrons and azaleas.

This year our plant sales will be conducted in the courtyard of the Education Building (where our Truss Show will be held) at Elm Bank.  This is the building closest to our display garden.  The entrance to the courtyard faces the display garden.  In front of this building, many other plant society vendors will have tents and tables set up to sell their particular specialties.  Proceed directly past all of these people to our sales area!!  You will see some blooming rhododendrons and signs to guide you.

4. Rhododendron Database Project

Ted Petit, the person who has been diligently working on creating an on-line database of all rhododendron species and hybrids, along with genealogy of the latter, is in the process of populating this database with photos for each entry.  In addition to the obvious need for photos of trusses, Ted needs photos of the various plant parts.  He requests that folks bring a sample of leaves (2 leaves are sufficient) and stem of rhododendrons they are entering in the truss show, placed in a labeled Ziploc bag.  He will take these home with him to photograph.

Finally, an exhortation from me to Please Participate!!  Even if it is only to browse the beautiful trusses on display and purchase a plant or two, you will have helped to make our most important event of the year a success.

If there remain any questions on the upcoming events, feel free to contact the presidents or a board member (including Susan Clark - 978-369-8597 or me - 508-435-8217).

2007 P4M Distribution

A total of 45 flats (675 Rhododendrons) were sold at Plane View Nursery, Portsmouth, RI on May 12, 2007. Many of the 13 flats that remain will benefit from having more time to establish better roots.

The plan for next year is to increase production to 90 flats which is about half way between this year's level and levels we have obtained in the past.

As always our goal will be to root plants that are not common in the trade. Less common Dexters and Westons always do well at both member and public sales. Indumented rhododendrons, hardy evergreen azaleas, early hardy lepidotes, late rhododendrons, and unnamed good doers are also good sellers.

If you know a member who has a rhododendron you desire, see if you can get cuttings.

This upcoming year we will again encourage purchase of plants by members who live outside the Boston area but who have growing conditions similar to ours.

If you are a member and have an interest in learning more about how you can obtain P4M plants or donate cuttings to P4M contact John Perkins at John.A.Perkins@gmail.com

Plants for Members Sale Saturday, May 12

The Plants for Members (P4M) Plant Sale will be Saturday May 12 from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Planeview Nursery in Portsmouth , RI.

The P4M program produces rooted cuttings raised from some of our chapter members' favorite plants.  Most of these plants are unavailable commercially, and can only be obtained through this chapter activity.  More than 200 varieties of choice Rhododendrons are available for purchase this year. Early access to these plants is one of the benefits of your membership to the ARS, Mass chapter.

These plants are in 4 inch pots and are priced at $3 each on May 12. P4M cutting Donor & Volunteer requests are given first choice, after which the sale is open to all members. The public is welcome. This is a great opportunity to try several/many varieties definitely not available at Home Depot, at a price that can't be beat.  Plants not sold/distributed on May 12 will be brought to our Big May 20 Sale & Truss Show at Elm Bank in Wellesley.  They will be priced higher at this sale.

Planeview Nursery is located in Portsmouth, Rhode Island on 770 Wappings Road.  Detailed directions are printed in the April newsletter.

The two co-chairs of this program (John Perkins, Fred Knippel) can be contacted for further information.  Their contact information is also in the April newsletter.

Attached is the list of plants available this year.  Note that some selections will have been sold out (to cutting donors and workers) before the sale to the general Chapter membership begins.
