Plant Sale and Flower Show at Elm Bank

Those in charge of the various activities at the May 19 and 20 Plant Sale and Flower Show at Elm Bank are to be congratulated for a well run weekend of events. Both the flower show and plant sale gave the public the opportunity to experience the wonder of the genus Rhododendron and the knowledge and experience of the members of the American Rhododendron Society Massachusetts Chapter.

Although more work is still needed to better integrate our activities into those of Society Row, the efforts by all members involved in this event made for a very successful and enjoyable event.

Sally and I want to especially thank all of those who helped at the plant sale. It is amazing how many members of the chapter just know how to make positive things happen at such an event.

PAYTON MEMORIAL GARDEN AT ELM BANK – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

This note is being sent on behalf of Pete Littlefield.

PAYTON MEMORIAL GARDEN AT ELM BANK – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our public display garden at Elm Bank (the home of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society) is now 5 years old and is well on its way to becoming a mature garden.  The Chapter has worked hard at making this the best garden that we can for generating public interest in rhododendrons.  The Garden Design Committee met in March and has suggested several new rhododendrons, shrubs, and ground covers to be added to the garden this spring.  As you see in this newsletter our April Chapter meeting will be held on the 29th at Elm Bank and we would like to have as much of the new planting, as well as needed maintenance work, completed prior to that date.  In order to accomplish this the Maintenance Committee needs your help.  We have scheduled 3 work parties in April on the following dates:

                                                Saturday, 4/7

                                                Sunday, 4/15

                                                Thursday, 4/26

All 3 days we will be in the garden from 9 am until noon.  Please join us for one, two, or all three of the days if you can.  Coffee and donuts will be served and there will be plenty for everyone to do.  If you are experienced we need your input, and if you are a beginner this is a great opportunity to meet and work beside your fellow chapter members.  And you will have contributed to one of our missions, which is to educate the public on the genus rhododendron.

If you would like to participate but cannot make one of the scheduled work days please contact us and we will arrange to meet you at the garden when you are available (Jim Aplin and I spend most of our waking hours in the garden anyway J).

If you can help, and we really hope that you can, please let me know so that we can plan for tools, refreshments, etc.  You can contact me as follows:

house. This is the schedule: Saturday 10 – 1 p.m. will be Susan Clark
and Betty Carhlian; 1-4 will be George Silverman; Sunday 10 – 1 will
be Pete Littlefield and 1-4 will be Doug & Susan Harding, who will
take down exhibit at end. Thanks for volunteering at the last board
meeting.

Hope for good weather!!!

Comments on Elm Bank Flower Show and Plant Sale

We have Survived! Thrived? Yes!

Whew! The pollen hasn't settled yet, even if we have finished our
Truss and Sale. Did you get the thunderstorm that passed thru about 6
p.m.? What a crazy spring we have had, although we can't complain
about this weekend during our show and sale. The Truss Show had
fabulous blooms. Our P4M plants looked especially vigorous this year.
We think all of us should feel proud of our show and our sale, and
especially our display garden. It was truly the loveliest area on view
this weekend.

We don't need to say to YOU how much effort was involved. Let's skip
the work as well as pleasure in the growing, and concentrate on the
efforts in putting on the show, the sale, and the garden. We know the
stars of our members, without whom it could not happen. (For the Truss
Show give Joe Bruso and Susan Clark a hand – literally, along with the
clerks and judges. For the sale Fred Knippel, Pete Littlefield and
Sally and John Perkins were indispensable. For the garden Pete and Jim
Alpin worked to put it together. For our educational and membership
efforts the Wrightingtons were booked and ready as always.) We think
that all of you also understand that we need constellations, not just
stars. Two new ones were Jon and Nancy Siegal, who helped in numerous
ways both days. Thank god human stars needn't have been created
millions of years ago!

Thanks, stars, of every brightness. Propagate yourselves.

Great Day at the Elm Bank Display Garden

Dear Board,

Doug and I had a lovely time at the garden yesterday. It looked great,
and I hope we have some plans to propagate Blue Baron!

Bill Sweeney's bench is very handsome and in perfect scale to the
site. Thanks so much, Susan and Betty. George, we thought your
dedication was very appropriate and Mimi and the family seemed very
pleased with all of it. Our two new members, Nancy and Jon Siegal,
were very engaged and appreciative of the demonstrations by Pete in
planting and Lorry in pruning. This is how we get new members to
become old, knowledgeable members like all of you.

Thanks so much for all the hard work that yesterday represents. As
George said, yesterday bodes well for the success of 5/20 and 5/21.

Elm Bank Display Garden Workday a Success

We had a very successful work party last Saturday thanks to 10 volunteers (close to a record) participating in the events. Tasks included completing the raking and removal of leaves from the garden, fertilizing all of the plants in the garden, spreading a 2nd truck load of mulch, and planting 42 groundcovers from Blanchette Gardens. My thanks goes to all those that participated and to Susan Clark for picking up the plants from Leo Blanchette.

Our next scheduled display garden work party is Tuesday, 4/25, at 9 am. I hope that you will be able to attend.

Someone left a hand cultivator at the garden Saturday and it is in the garden tool shed.

Elm Bank Workday

The 2nd spring work party at our Elmbank display garden will be held this coming Saturday, 4/15, from 1-3 pm. Tasks will include removing the rest of the leaves in the garden, spreading mulch and fertilizer, and planting some new groundcovers from Leo Blanchette. We could use your help if you have an hour or 2 available.

If you could let me know if you can make it it would help me plan for equipment, coffee, etc. Thanks.
