Field trip date change

The Chapter Field Trip to Cochato Nursery in Holbrook has been moved from Saturday June 25 to Sunday June 26 to avoid a conflict with the P4M meeting on Saturday.

After our inspiring lecture on hostas in February a number of members expressed interest in going to Cochato Nursery, owned by our speakers Chuck Doughty and Sue DuBrava.   They are open Thursday - Sunday, from 9 to 5.  Let us plan to meet there about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday,  June 26 (to avoid the worst of the traffic), and by all means carpool.  To reach them take Rte 128 Braintree Exit 6 to Rte. 37S.  They are 5 miles from exit, just over the Holbrook line. .  This nursery is located at 373 North Franklin St., Holbrook MA (781.767.9770). Afterwards, we can find a place for lunch.

ARS 2008 Field Trip to Maine

Join us on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 for a day trip to Maine. Doug and I have been intrigued by reading about the development of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Booth Bay. With over 250 acres of waterfront property it has a lovely setting for the ambitious designs of many different gardens. In addition, it is hosting this month an exhibit by George Sherwood of his "Wind and Light Kinetic Sculptures." 

 

According to the website (www.maingardens.org) the botanical garden is about 1 hour northeast from Portland. Since we are two hours from Portland, we plan to leave at 8 a.m. so we can be there about 11 a.m., allowing several hours for a thorough tour. There is a cafeteria, if one does not want to bring a sandwich.  On the way back we plan to stop at York Nurseries in Bath, about ½ hour back towards home. Tom is a member of the ARS-MA chapter and has a very impressive list of rhododendrons he grows for sale, as well as companion plants, kalmias, and magnolias. He said that he would be there that afternoon to tell us about his nursery. (He also said that the botancial gardens were spectacular.)

 

We will be happy to bring up to three people with us in our car on a first come, first serve basis. We can also plan to just meet at the garden at about 11 a.m. Until I hear from some of you, I will not try to arrange a tour. Because of the distance, some might want to stay over night, which should be possible in the middle of the week. We considered going on the weekend, but the traffic in and out of Maine is so heavy that we abandoned that in favor of the mid-week date.

ARS Mass Chapter Display Garden Work Party

This is being send on behalf of Peter Littlefield, Co-chair of the Mass Chapter's Display Garden Committee.

 

Our Chapter maintains a public rhododendron display garden at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society's Elm Bank headquarters.  Elm Bank is located in Wellesley and hosts a number of plant society display gardens, including our own.  Maintaining our garden is a fair amount of work but we try and keep it fun for all the volunteers.  Our first work party of the year is scheduled for Saturday, April 5^th from 9:30 am until 12:30pm.  Work hours are flexible and you can come or leave anytime during the morning.  The work will be light, mostly cleaning up the winter debris in the garden.  Coffee and donuts will be provided.

If you could spare a couple of hours on the 5^th we would welcome your help.  Please let me  know if you are planning to attend so that we can provide adequate refreshments and that we can notify you in case we have to postpone due to weather.

ARS-MA FIELD TRIP TO POLLY HILL ARBORETUM 6/23/07

 

The Mass Chapter is going to visit Polly Hill Arboretum this June in honor of Polly's 100^th birthday. Polly began gardening seriously at her farm on Martha's Vineyard when she was 50 years old. That doesn't sound too unusual until you learn that she wanted to grow her things, trees included, from seed. To us she is best known for her introduction of the North Tisbury azaleas. She selected (not hybridized) her North Tisbury strain from  R. nakaharai, having acquired seeds collected in the wild and given to her by her long time friend Dr. Tsuneshige Rokujo. 

 

Although a real rhododendron enthusiast, Polly's horticultural interests included many genera. We should see the fruits of her efforts in magnolias, dogwoods, stewartias, and conifers. Bloom times are later on the Vineyard, but who knows what this spring season will be like after such a confusing winter (to plants and us alike). Nonetheless, there are bound to be many lovely plants to see. Our guide will tour us around the twenty acres she cultivated, crisscrossed by stone walls and showing their history as a sheep farm. Her goal in setting up the arboretum was to add to the plant diversity on Martha's Vineyard (poor, in her opinion), develop and introduce outstanding plants for American gardeners, and to serve as a sanctuary for plants that are threatened with extinction in their native habitats. In the process she made a beautiful place to visit.

 

Here is our schedule and the costs involved:

We go on our own to the parking facilities ($15 per day) for the Island Queen Ferry in Falmouth. The ferry leaves promptly at 9:00 am, so arrive in time to park and buy your ticket ($15 for round trip without car). We will be picked up by van at Oak Bluffs and driven to the Arboretum ($8 per person each way). Our private guided tour begins at 10 am and lasts a bit more than an hour. The Arboretum would appreciate a donation of $5.00, but accepts reciprocal privileges for members of the American Horticultural Society or the Arnold Arboretum.

 

We should bring our own sandwiches so we can have a picnic on the grounds. After wandering on our own, we will be transported back to the ferry to catch the 2:15 pm trip back to Falmouth. (This is the second to last trip of the day – anyone who wanders away and misses it has one more chance to leave the island!) We arrive back in Falmouth at 2:50 for the trip home.

 

We must know how many are coming in order to get the right number of vans to drive us on the island. Please look carefully at your calendar and call or email me if you are interested. Guests are welcome. Since we all get so busy in the spring, decide NOW to come, if at all possible, and put it on your calendar. The deadline to respond is June 18.

Garden Description - The setting for the Bruso garden is an oak/pine woods with many large glacial erratics scattered about. The dominant plantings are of broadleaf evergreen rhododendrons with a good number of small-leaved evergreens (lepidotes) and deciduous azaleas.  A number of magnolias, including all the hardy species, are also present.  There is a heavy concentration on species rhododendrons and primary hybrids, most having been grown from seed, and in many cases planted in masses.

Directions - From Hopkinton Center take Rte 85 south.  Follow for approximately 1 mile to overhead blinking light.  Take a left at the light onto Chestnut St.  Follow for 1 mile and take a right onto South Mill St. and follow to #61 (3rd driveway on the left).

Garden Description - A 15-year-old woodland garden.  We think of it as a trial garden for plants that will survive dry shade with the added bonus of a small, but hungry deer herd.

Garden Description - We have 1.2 acres turned into garden. Twenty-eight years ago we planted a rhododendron hedge and started a vegetable garden and home orchard. The vegetable garden expanded, and more perennial beds were added, but it took membership in the ARS & children growing up (no more sports events to attend) to encourage us to expand the garden into more parts of the yard.  When we decided to install deer fencing, the clearing of all periphery shrubs opened up even more areas to populate with chosen plants.
