Van Veen Rhododendron Order - Last Call

Last chance to submit your rhododendron order for the 2009 Van Veen group order.  Anyone who still plans to submit an order should do so by tomorrow (Sunday) night.  If you have misplaced your order form, let me know and I'll be happy to e-mail you another copy.

I will be sending out a list of the special RareFind plants at a later time.  I will allow pre-ordering of some of these plants on a first-come first-served basis.

Note:  This email, and all emails you get from me are sent to ALL local Mass Chapter members for whom I have an email address (200 plus people).  It is sent out "blind", so that you can see only my address and your own, but not that of other members.  This is for privacy reasons.
If you don't intend to submit an order, you need not respond to this note - this isn't a personal note to you and I won't be offended if I get no response.

Thanks!
Joe Bruso

Update on R. canadense

8 samples of wild collected Rhododendron canadense have now been tested for ploidy level from central PA to eastern Nova Scotia and 6 places in between and all samples to date indicate that R. canadense is a diploid.

More testing is still needed but the evidence is starting to strongly suggest that R. canadense is normally a diploid and not a tetraploid as documented in much of the literature.

These findings are still considered inconclusive and only intended to reflect the on going status of a portion of the investigation into the ploidy level of populations of native R.canadense.

Van Veen Order 2009

Dear Members,

It's time to submit your Van Veen order for delivery in April, 2009.  Again, the order should be sent to me via e-mail.

Print this note, as it contains instructions for ordering.

This process is very late this year, so I need you to get your order to me ASAP.

PLEASE SEND ME YOUR ORDER BY 12/25/08 AT THE LATEST.

Attached is a Word document with the Van Veen plants available this year.  There are MANY plants that have never before been available from Van Veen, so I urge you to take a close look at this list.  I've added the Hardiness Rating for nearly all of them.  You will also see some "notes' next to some of the plants, which point out special features for some with which I'm familiar.  To obtain additional information for any of these plants, I recommend the following:

  1. Greer's Guidebook to Available Rhododendrons – a must have book that includes entries on the majority of the plants listed.
  2. Google search for the name, and you are likely to find one or more references to that plant.

Overview

·        Each year, the Massachusetts Chapter submits a group order to Van Veen Nurseries of Portland Oregon, a wholesale grower, to take advantage of a volume discount.

·        These plants are mostly yearlings from rooted cuttings. These are high quality plants at an excellent price.  They arrive un-potted and need to be simply potted up or planted into a "nursery" area for ease of watering the first 1-2 years.

·        Many plants will have a limited supply and will be distributed on a first-ordered first-served basis, so there is an advantage to mailing your order early (the postmark date governs).

Instructions

·        Submit your order to me via E-mail to jpbruso@aol.com.  List the plants you want and the quantity of each.

·        Include the following information:

o       Your Name

o       Full Mailing Address

o       Phone Number

o       Whether you would like to help with the sorting & distribution.

·        Prices:

o       Hybrids:  $4

o       Species:   $5

o       Azaleas:  $3.50

o       Shipping & packing materials:  $1.50 per plant in addition to plant cost.

·        Return the Order to me by 12/25.  Send no money until you receive the order confirmation & invoice from me.  The invoices will be sent sometime after the first of the year based on confirmation of plant availability from Van Veen. The plants will be available for pickup in April.  Notification of the pickup date will be provided with the invoices and in the Newsletter.  Distribution will once again be at the Hunnewell barn in Wellesley.

·        There will be a 2 plant minimum order per plant type for the group order as a whole.   You don't necessarily have to order 2 per type yourself in order to receive the plant, since if others order the same type, the minimum will be met.  However, to increase your chances of getting a particular type you really desire, especially if it isn't one of the more "popular" varieties, you may want to order 2 yourself.

New This Year

Each year I order extra plants from Van Veen and other sources, so that members who did not get an order to me on time can still purchase some plants, and so that those picking up orders have an opportunity to browse and buy additional plants.  This year will be no exception.  However, in addition to these smaller plants, I'll have on hand about 100 larger, 1 gallon sized plants from RareFind Nursery.  These are special plants with outstanding foliage or other special features.  Most are from RareFind's "Collectors List", in small quantities, and are not available to the public.  I will have on hand from 1 to several of each type.  More information on these plants will be provided later.

Notes to newer members:

·        For lists of plants that will do exceptionally well in our area, I suggest you refer to our chapter's "Proven Performers" list and also the list of the late Dick Brooks' favorite plants published in the Spring/Summer 2003 issue of The Rosebay.

·        Best reference:  Greer's Guidebook to Available Rhododendrons, available from our book table at chapter meetings.

·        A primer on how to successfully raise small plants to landscape size will be available during the distribution.

As in previous years, volunteers will be needed to assist in distributing the plants. This involves spending a few hours on Saturday morning of the distribution weekend.  If you are able to help, please let me know when you send your order.

If you have any questions please call me at 508-435-8217 (evenings and weekends) or E-Mail me at jpbruso@aol.com

Sad News: Bill Zurich

I am saddened to report that Dr. Bill Zurich unexpectedly passed away
this afternoon from a heart attack. Bill was a member of the
Princeton Chapter and had a magnificent 5 acre garden in Toms River,
NJ. He was a true gentleman, loved to show his garden--one of the
best in the East, and his love of rhododendrons was well known. His
garden was the hit of the 2004 convention. We have lost a great
personal friend and a friend of the genus rhododendron.

Ploidy Level of Rhododendron canadense

In the papers

http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/fletcher/staff/tranney/colemanii.pdf

http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/theses/available/etd-03112008-225130/unrestricted/etd.pdf

Rhododendron canadense was reported to be a diploid. A few studies prior to this one reported that Rhododendron canadense was a tetraploid. Most Rhododendron references state that Rhododendron canadense is a tetraploid.

A study of wild populations of Rhododendron canadense is currently being conducted to clarify the ploidy level of Rhododendron canadense.

So far test results for 6 different populations indicate that Rhododendron canadense is a diploid. However more collections and more tests need to be conducted.

Anyone willing to provide additional Rhododendron canadense material from wild populations or who can supply the locations for such collection is encouraged to contact John and Sally Perkins using the contact link on this bog.

P4M 2 Additional Dates

2 additional P4M dates have been added to the calendar.

Group Rhododendron Order - Van Veen Update

I'm currently working on putting together the availability list for the "Van Veen" order.  I obtained the information from the nursery very late this year.  However, I think you will find it to have been worth the wait.  Van Veen is offering MANY plants never available before.  This will include lots of new hybrids, as well as species.  I've pre-ordered many of these, as I know Van Veen will sell out fast.

In addition to the "Liner Sized" plants from Van Veen, I've pre-ordered 100 1 gallon sized plants from RareFind Nursery.  These plants will be available for purchase on the day of order distribution.  They are all very choice, from their "Collector's List".  Many of these can only be commercially obtained from RareFind, but you cannot order most of them from their website, as the supply is too limited to make available to the public.  These will have suburb foliage appeal in addition to the flowers.  I've obtaining a wholesale price on these, so I think you will find them to be a great value.

I hope to be able to e-mail you the plant list by the end of the Thanksgiving weekend.
Once again this year, ordering will be via e-mail to me.

ARS Mass Chapter Meeting Tomorrow - Foliage!

Our October meeting will is tomorrow (Wednesday, 10/22/08) at 7:30 PM at the Waltham Field Station.
The theme for this meeting, appropriate for this month, is foliage.

Firstly, our Fall Foliage show will be held.  Bring your best - and worst foliage, to be judged by popular vote.
Please arrive a little early to set up your foliage.  See this month's chapter Newsletter for full details, entry classes and rules.

Secondly, Rolff Briggs of Tree Specialists, Inc will present on maintenance of shrubs and trees.  For most of us that grow rhododendrons, trees are a vital part of our landscape and essential for keeping our broad-leaved rhododendrons looking their best.  So it is appropriate that we learn more about these major components of our gardens.  Again, see the latest Newsletter for full details.

Once again we continue our very popular tradition of having our annual Founders' Day Brunch at beautiful Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA.  Come and enjoy the spectacular late fall landscape on Tower Hill's hilltop, tour the lush Orangerie (a fabulous glass house full of tropicals), and do some early Christmas shopping in the wonderful gift shop.  If the weather is cooperative, save some time to tour the gardens, which will still have quite a bit of seasonal interest, and walk the trails through the fields and woods.

Program:  The Dick Brooks Memorial Speaker this year will be Warren Leach, landscape horticulturist and co-owner of Tranquil Lake Nursery in Rehoboth, MA.  Warren is well known as a speaker to garden clubs at the local and state levels, and as a lecturer for the Arnold Arboretum, University of Rhode Island, and various conferences.  He creates designs for homes and businesses, ranging from renovations to a perennial border, back yard, or a construction site.  In 2007 he and his wife Debi Hogan won awards for their miniature Classical Chinese Scholars Garden at the New England Spring Flower Show.  Tranquil Lake Nursery specializes in daylilies and both Siberian and Japanese iris.  With ten acres of growing fields it is the largest grower of them in the Northeast, offering more than 2500 daylily cultivars, and it is one of 17 test sites for daylilies and a display garden for the American Hemerocallis Society.  They have a great web site.  www.tranquil-lake.com

Seed Exchange:  We will also have our annual seed exchange, including Tony Knight's 2006 Cross of the Year.  Bring your labeled contributions to the exchange in ziploc bags.

Brunch: Starting at 10:00 a.m. we will have a delicious brunch, very similar to last year's fare, but including a wonderful sounding Tuscan bean soup as well this year.  The apricot pudding is also returning!

Cost: $36  per person            Reservations required

Reservations: Send your check, with your name and address, for $36 per person, made out to ARSMC to:

Pete Littlefield  75 Oak Street, Holliston, MA 01764  (508 429-6470  Email woodland.gardener@verizon.net)

F     DEADLINE FOR RESERVATIONS     NOVEMBER 1    E

We must give the caterer the number of attendees before the brunch, so be sure to get your checks & reservations in to the Littlefields by the deadline.

Directions: From Route 495 take Route 290 West towards Worcester.  Take Exit 24, Church Street, Northborough/Boylston.  Follow Church Street towards Boylston (Right at the foot of the exit ramp), about 3 miles.  The entrance to Tower Hill is on the right, well signed.  You do not need to pay an entrance fee;  say you are attending the Brunch.  Follow the entrance road up the hill to the parking lots.  Our brunch is in the Stoddard Building, the main building, in one of the meeting rooms at the end of the long corridor.
