Introducing Rhododendron 'Dick Brooks'

Rhododendron 'Dick Brooks'
Rhododendron 'Dick Brooks' (Patterson/Hibben)

Rhododendron 'Dick Brooks' (Patterson/Hibben) was introduced on Sunday November 12, 2006 at the Massachusetts Chapter's Founder’s Day Meeting. The Dick Brooks Memorial Speaker for the meeting was Hank Schannen of RareFind Nursery, Jackson, New Jersey.

This web album link below contains images of Rhododendron 'Dick Brooks':

Rhododendron 'Dick Brooks' Album

The Massachusetts Chapter seed exchange is an event held during the November meeting to encourage hybridizing for the New England climate. The chairman of this one-man committee is responsible for the "Cross of the Year", a cross that is designed to result in something "different" or "better," and to provide multiple seed packets for distribution to all members who have an interest in growing rhododendrons from seed. Charlie Patterson was the Massachusetts Chapter seed exchange chairman in 1989 when he presented the "Cross of the Year", as R. ‘Dexter's Giant Red’ x yakushimanum 'Whitney's Dwarf'. Charlie, who is a veterinarian, described this cross as a Great Dane and Chihuahua eliciting laughter at that November chapter meeting.

R. ‘Dexter's Giant Red’ (P4M (Plants for Members) #240) from the Heritage Plantation Sandwich, MA, is a large plant producing large red trusses with dark red stippling in the throat. R. yakushimanum 'Whitney's Dwarf' (P4M #1167) is a dwarf selection of the species degronianum ssp. yakushimanum from the west coast’s Whitney nursery. Charlie and CJ Patterson are well known in the Massachusetts Chapter for their breeding of rhododendrons that have interesting foliage, especially “big leaves.” 'Lorry Roeder', a Patterson cross of R. yakushimanum and rex, and 'Peggy Lawson', a yellow-flowered cross by Lawson who was the chapter seed exchange chair before Charlie, are rhododendrons raised from seed and named by the Pattersons. R. prunifolium 'Sunset Trail', maximum 'Dee Walker' and a yet to be named, R. makinoi, are species they have selected.

Now the story turns to George Hibben, of Lincoln, MA, an excellent and avid grower of plants from seed. George has grown seed of rhododendron crosses from many Massachusetts Chapter members including Ian Donovan, Peggy Lawson, Tony Knights, Sally and John Perkins, and Ron Rabideau. As he has for many years, he selected a few packs of rhododendron seed including Charlie's 1989 "Cross of the Year". He planted the seed in early 1990, labeling this particular cross #90134. George grew on plants for Dick Brooks' Kalmia Wood Nursery, a small operation of spring and fall weekend sales, which took place on Dick's driveway. Dick would visit George's propagating beds fairly frequently to select plants for his sale.

For the 2000 ARS convention in Burlington, MA, Dick selected a plant from George's #90134 seedlings to be propagated for the P4M cuttings sale (P4M #5542). He also photographed a truss and used the image in his article promoting the convention “Rhododendron Diversity: The Challenges of New England” (JARS Vol. 54, No 1, Winter 2000). George's garden was included on tour E of the gardens west of Boston. Other plants featured at this convention were R. 'Crimson Constellation' hybridized by Dick, R. 'Landmark' and R. 'New Century' introduced by Weston Nurseries, and Kalmia 'Madeline' and Dick Jaynes’ ‘Meteor’. While working at the convention plant sale, Dick suggested that we try a plant labeled P4M #5542. So we purchased the plant which is now growing very well in our New Hampshire garden although it has not set flower buds.

Now the history takes a personal turn to how we met Dick. In 1989 Dick was selling azaleas at a New England Wildflower Society plant sale at Garden in the Woods, Framingham, MA. We purchased a few deciduous azaleas from Dick including a cumberlandense open pollinated seedling we now call 'Canobie Candela'. Dick suggested we join the American Rhododendron Society; talked about how the Massachusetts Chapter was going to host the society convention on Cape Cod in May 1990; and told us about the plant sale that was a feature of the convention. Dick put us in contact with CJ Patterson who was in charge of the convention plant sale. In fact, our first activity as society members was a workday potting up Plane View Nursery’s tissue cultured plants at Les Wyman's greenhouse. Moreover, our first official chapter meeting was in November 1989 when Charlie distributed his "Cross of the Year," R. 'Dexter's Giant Red' x yakushimanum 'Whitney's Dwarf.'

Ron Rabideau, who succeeded Charlie as the Massachusetts Chapter Seed Exchange Chair, left New England in 1997 to become General Nursery Manager at RareFind Nursery. In 2004 Ron inquired about the possibility of receiving cuttings of some of the better unnamed rhododendrons growing in the Boston and New Hampshire area for evaluation in New Jersey. Having access to numerous chapter members' gardens containing rhododendrons grown from seed, including our own in Salem, NH, George's in Lincoln, MA, Joe Bruso's in Hopkinton, MA, Fred Knippel's in Acton, MA, Jim Welch’s in Londonderry, NH, and Dean Barber's old garden in Contoocook, NH, we supplied Ron cuttings of several rhododendrons indicating that R. 'Pressey's Peachy' (Cowles), 'Canobie Canary' (Knights), ‘Ice Cube’ X yakushimanum (Stuart/Barber), and 'Dexter's Giant Red' X yakushimanum 'Whitney's Dwarf' (Patterson/Hibben) were among the best performers.

In October of 2006 while we were visiting RareFind Nursery on our speaking tour to chapters in Distinct 7, Ron, being impressed by the plant's indumented foliage, suggested that RareFind would consider introducing the Patterson/Hibben plant if the nursery was supplied with 100 cuttings and the plant was named. George responded in his usual proactive manner when we conveyed Ron's offer to him. He contacted Hank Schannen, owner of RareFind, to discuss delivery of the cuttings; Jay Murray, North American Registrar of Plant Names, to check name availability and reserve 'Dick Brooks'; and consulted Dick’s widow, Jane, for her approval. On Sunday November 12, 2006 at the Massachusetts Chapter's Founders Day meeting, George presented 100 cuttings to Hank Schannen for commercial introduction of R. 'Dexter's Giant Red' X yakushimanum 'Whitney's Dwarf’ which will be registered as R. 'Dick Brooks' in the spring of 2007.

The late Dick Brooks, an ARS Gold Medal recipient, was a great enthusiast to the genus Rhododendron serving in many capacities over the years at the Chapter level and as President of the American Rhododendron Society. It is only fitting that this plant which has so much Chapter history would honor him.

Ted and the October Foilage Show

Dear Board,

Thanks for making the October Meeting with its Foliage Show and
Cutting Exchange a success. Special kudos should go to Ted for his
excellent presentation. The amount of work involved is staggering, but
it should be a wonderful tool. Ted, you're putting the Mass Chapter on
the map. Janet, again thanks for your amazing ability to make
something happen virtually overnight. The frame made the certificate
for George look very impressive. Susan and C.J. made mounting the show
look effortless. Rhodies really do have wonderful foliage. Thanks.
Betty, congratulations on the newly endowed award for Best in Show in
your name. Your work for the Chapter makes the award an even bigger
prize to strive for.

Joe has said that he wants to revisit our strategy with MassHort at
the next meeting. If we are going to raise hell about the contract, we
should do it sooner rather than later. I put in a call to Thomas last
week about the internship and the Truss Show location and have heard
nothing yet. Unfortunately, Doug and I are getting into a period where
we have little time for anything besides family - wedding, etc. These
things never come when you want them, do they? Anyway, all can be
thinking carefully about what will be most productive for ARS.
Remember, the continued discussion about records – where they are,
what we should be saving and where – will also be on the agenda.

Happy Halloween.

RhODIES: New Plant Genealogy Research System

RhODIES: New Plant Genealogy Research System

Wednesday, October 18, 7:30 pm at Waltham Field Station

Home gardeners and nursery and landscape professionals are invited to
preview the latest tool for rhododendron research at the American
Rhododendron Society Massachusetts Chapter meeting on Wednesday,
October 18, 7:30 pm at the UMass Eastern Extension Center (Waltham
Field Station), 240 Beaver St. Waltham, Mass. The Rhododendron On-line
Display and Information Exchange System (RhODIES), a web-based,
visually-oriented research system that traces the genealogical history
of plant species and hybrids, will be demonstrated at the meeting,
which is free and open to the public.

The RhODIES database brings together a wealth of rhododendron
information resources in an easily accessible electronic format. So
far, more than 1,000 species and more than 400 species cultivars have
been entered along with taxonomical information.

RhODIES displays and prints a hybrid's genealogy in a family tree
format. Flower colors are cross-referenced among several industry
color standards including the Royal Horticultural Society, National
Bureau of Standards and the traditional Ridgeway horticultural color
systems. Each entry will have six photographs for study: plant, truss,
flower, leaves, stem, and new growth. Users will be able to make
comments on plants but will not be able to change scientific data.

RhODIES will help breeders determine what species or cultivars might
make the best parents to generate plants with certain traits. It will
help landscapers determine how to select for hardiness, color, and
bloom period and will be a source of professional plant photographs
for reference.

Ted Petit, the chapter's corresponding secretary, started the RhODIES
system to help fellow enthusiasts visualize hybrid rhododendron
genealogy. Petit has been asked to join the ARS national rhododendron
database committee, which has been charged with developing a research
system for ARS members. The national system will incorporate a
database of over 30,000 hybrids maintained by Bob and Jay Murray of
the New Jersey chapter.

"The flexibility of the RhODIES system, which will be useful to
everyone from the amateur home gardener to the most sophisticated
botanist or breeder, makes its long range potential so exciting," said
Susan Harding, co-president of the ARS Massachusetts Chapter.

Petit, a Bellingham, Mass. resident, is an avid rhododendron
enthusiast and president of his own software development and sales
consulting company, AppliTech, Inc. Ted has 35 years experience in the
computer, military electronics and industrial automation industries..

The American Rhododendron Society is a non-profit organization whose
purpose is to encourage interest in and to disseminate information
about the genus Rhododendron. Society activities include public
education, flower shows, seed exchanges, scientific studies, and
communication through publications and local and national meetings.
ARS chapters are located throughout the United States and Canada and
in Denmark, Holland, Scotland, Sweden and Sikkim.

It's been fascinating reading the Perkins' posts about what is in bloom at Canobie Lake, NH and comparing it with my garden in Concord, MA. We really do live in rather different places. Right now I have my late mid-season plants in full bloom at the same time as many late plants -never had Robert Alison blooming at the same time as Delayed Surprise. Summer Summit and Summer Snow still pretty tight. Disca, Robert Alison and Cadis have never been so perfect. It's been a beautiful, if peculiar spring. And the rain has stopped!

Comments on Elm Bank Flower Show and Plant Sale

We have Survived! Thrived? Yes!

Whew! The pollen hasn't settled yet, even if we have finished our
Truss and Sale. Did you get the thunderstorm that passed thru about 6
p.m.? What a crazy spring we have had, although we can't complain
about this weekend during our show and sale. The Truss Show had
fabulous blooms. Our P4M plants looked especially vigorous this year.
We think all of us should feel proud of our show and our sale, and
especially our display garden. It was truly the loveliest area on view
this weekend.

We don't need to say to YOU how much effort was involved. Let's skip
the work as well as pleasure in the growing, and concentrate on the
efforts in putting on the show, the sale, and the garden. We know the
stars of our members, without whom it could not happen. (For the Truss
Show give Joe Bruso and Susan Clark a hand – literally, along with the
clerks and judges. For the sale Fred Knippel, Pete Littlefield and
Sally and John Perkins were indispensable. For the garden Pete and Jim
Alpin worked to put it together. For our educational and membership
efforts the Wrightingtons were booked and ready as always.) We think
that all of you also understand that we need constellations, not just
stars. Two new ones were Jon and Nancy Siegal, who helped in numerous
ways both days. Thank god human stars needn't have been created
millions of years ago!

Thanks, stars, of every brightness. Propagate yourselves.

Great Day at the Elm Bank Display Garden

Dear Board,

Doug and I had a lovely time at the garden yesterday. It looked great,
and I hope we have some plans to propagate Blue Baron!

Bill Sweeney's bench is very handsome and in perfect scale to the
site. Thanks so much, Susan and Betty. George, we thought your
dedication was very appropriate and Mimi and the family seemed very
pleased with all of it. Our two new members, Nancy and Jon Siegal,
were very engaged and appreciative of the demonstrations by Pete in
planting and Lorry in pruning. This is how we get new members to
become old, knowledgeable members like all of you.

Thanks so much for all the hard work that yesterday represents. As
George said, yesterday bodes well for the success of 5/20 and 5/21.

Doug and Susan Harding

Caring for Small Rhododendrons

Caring for Small Rhododendrons

Joe Bruso

Presented here is a guide for caring for small rhododendrons.

In the United States, the two predominant methods of propagating hybrid rhododendrons are by rooting cuttings and by tissue culture.  The plants produced from these two methods need special care their first 1-2 years in order to have a high success rate.

How to Kill your Small Plants

Dig a hole in the landscape, plant them, water them once then forget them.  Alternately, leave them in their pots in full sun and forget to water, or over-fertilize them.

Proper care can be divided into 2 timeframes:

1.      First Summer

2.      First Winter

First Summer

Key to Success:  Prevent desiccation.

The soil around your plants should be kept moist at all times.  Letting it dry out completely is the surest way to kill them.  This is especially true of plants grown in a medium with a high percentage of peat, since once peat dries out completely, it becomes very difficult to re-wet short of soaking in a bucket of water.

The two most common ways to prevent desiccation are to keep the plants in pots and water daily or as needed, or plant them in a “nursery”.  A nursery is a prepared bed with amended soil, at least partial shade, no tree root competition, and with the plants relatively close together.  Average sized rooted cuttings can be planted a foot or so apart.  This simplifies care, especially watering.  The nursery should be watered every 2 days or so at first, gradually decreasing the frequency as the plants become established and/or as weather dictates.  Rhododendrons can be kept in such a nersery for 2-4 years before they crowd eachother and need to be moved

Whether kept in pots or in a nursery for the summer, they should be located in a partly to mostly shaded location.  The north side of a structure is an excellent location.  High shade from oak or pine trees is also great.  If they must be exposed to direct sun, early morning sun (as on the east side of a structure) is preferable to noontime and evening sun.  The more sun your plants get, the more often they will need to be watered.  Avoid deep shade, as found in a dense grove of white pines with low hanging branches.

First Winter

Key to Success:  Protect from extremes of Winter temperature, sun & wind.

A commonly used practice is to build a simple plywood box to cover the plants.  It can be small enough to cover one plant up to the dimensions of an entire sheet of plywood or larger, depending on how many plants you have.  Construction with screws will make taking it apart easier.  The box needs no bottom.  Potted plants are placed as close together as possible on the ground inside the box.  Mid-November is the usual time of year for this.  The pots need to be well watered before covering.  Put a mouse trap or some rodent bait inside the box to guard against mice & vole damage.  A slight gap (fraction of an inch) should be left on one area of the top to provide minimal ventilation.  Bank woodchips or bark mulch around the base of the box to cover any gaps between the wood and the ground.  If you have planted your plants in a nursery, the box can be built or placed over the nursery.

After their first protected winter, your small rhododendrons will be much more able to withstand the rigors of winter without special protection.  Protecting them as described above for another year will still be beneficial, however.  After their first or second year of protection, they can be handled in one of several ways:

1.      Re-potted and grown on in larger pots for another year.

2.      Planted in a nursery.

3.      If large enough, planted into the landscape.

Re-Potting Considerations

Small rhododenrons are usually started in an “artificial” medium – one composed of peat and pearlite for example.  Rhododendron roots can be slow to grow out of  a medium they are used to and into a much different medium.  When repotting into larger pots, one should include in the new soil some of the ingredients found in the medium the plant was grown in (i.e., peat and pearlite) mixed with soil as it exists in their future nursery or planting location.

The pot should be large enough to easily contain the root ball plus allow you to put new soil all the way around it.  Avoid pots that are too small for the root ball such that you have to jam the roots in with little room to add new soil.  Alternately, avoid oversized pots in proportion to the root ball.  Pull the roots apart as much as possible when either repotting or planting into a nursery or the landscape to help help the roots to spread out into the new soil.  Little to no fertilizer is required at this time.  Better to err on the stingy side than over fertilizing, which can be lethal.  A small amount of slow release fertilizer works well.

Summary

The keys to success with small rhododendron plants are very simple:  keep them regularly watered at all times, and provide some protection their first winter.  With just a little care you will be very successful.

Elm Bank Display Garden Workday a Success

We had a very successful work party last Saturday thanks to 10 volunteers (close to a record) participating in the events. Tasks included completing the raking and removal of leaves from the garden, fertilizing all of the plants in the garden, spreading a 2nd truck load of mulch, and planting 42 groundcovers from Blanchette Gardens. My thanks goes to all those that participated and to Susan Clark for picking up the plants from Leo Blanchette.

Our next scheduled display garden work party is Tuesday, 4/25, at 9 am. I hope that you will be able to attend.

Someone left a hand cultivator at the garden Saturday and it is in the garden tool shed.
