Weston Nurseries Plants Still Available

We still have some of the Weston Nurseries hybrids available for sale.

In keeping with our Donated Plant sale tradition whereby at the end of the sale we cut all prices in half, prices on these plants will remain at half price, as follows.

Prices

$10 per 6-pack.

$22 per Flat (three 6-packs)

All proceeds go to the Mass Chapter. These are all excellent plants, and do not look like "left overs".

If you need to create a hedge, or want to procure plants for growing on as gifts, this is a low-cost way to do so.

The plants are at my home in Hopkinton, MA.  Contact me to arrange a time to stop by to make a purchase.

Special Sale of Weston Nurseries Plants

To Mass Chapter Members,

As occurred 2 years ago, we again have the opportunity to purchase very hardy Weston Nurseries-developed rhododendrons and azaleas at irresistible prices.  Wayne Mezitt, owner of Weston Nurseries, has provided the Chapter with small plants in order to get them into the hands of people who can appreciate them.  Since Weston Nurseries has stopped doing their own propagation, these are likely to be the last small plants we will obtain from them.  This is an opportunity to obtain some of Weston's best introductions at great prices.  These plants were bred for the New England climate and should perform exceptionally well for you.

Supplies for some selections should be sufficient, but others are limited.  Most are in 3" cells, with a few in 2" cells.  In many cases there are two plants to the cell, which can be separated.  Many of the deciduous azaleas have bloom buds.

The plants will be sold at our annual Donated Plant Sale, occurring at our next Chapter meeting, Wednesday, September 21 at the Elm Bank East Wing.  See the latest Chapter Newsletter for directions and details on the events scheduled for this meeting.  Due to the volume of plants available, sales will begin about 6:30 PM, prior to the start of the Pot Luck Supper.  Please arrive early for the best selection.

Prices

$20 per 6-pack.

$45 for three 6-packs (1 flat in most cases). Each 6-pack contains 6 to 10 plants.

Exceptions:

·         Smirnowii-Yak hybrid, in individual 3" pots, are $3 each.

·         Selections in short supply (as noted below) will be sold as 3 packs at $9 each to allow more people to obtain them.

A few words on some selections:

I consider Abigail Adams the best hybrid evergreen azalea for my Zone 5b garden.  Unlike many evergreen azalea hybrids, it is fully hardy for me, never showing any winter damage.  The very large blooms are a wonderful shade of medium pink, totally covering the plant with, even in a shady location. When grown in adequate sun, the foliage turns orange/red in the fall.

Anyone who has seen Blue Barron in bloom in our display garden knows what a special plant it is.  It is one of, if not the bluest, most floriferous of the blue small leaved rhododendrons that can be grown in our area.  Blue Barron won Best in Show in this year's Truss Show.  Need I say more?  We have a limited supply of this cultivar.  First come, first served.

Rhododendron Show & Sale this Weekend!

This weekend (May 17 & 18) will be the high point of our Rhododendron calendar with our annual Rhododendron Flower Show and Plant Sale.  As it has been for the past few years, we will be at Elm Bank in Wellesley, MA (see the Mass Hort website for directions to Elm Bank).  Entrance and parking are free.  Please see this month's Newsletter for full details.  Here are a few highlights.

This year, the Rhododendron society will have the privilege of holding our Flower Show in the "Manor House".  This is the large mansion you may have noticed during prior visits to Elm Bank.  Note that we will have much space under cover for flowers, plants and people, so please come rain or shine.
Please bring your trusses on Saturday.  Registration begins at 12:30 PM.  (I'll be behind the Registration Desk frantically trying to keep up.)  The weather has delayed the opening of many trusses, so this might be a good year to bring whatever you have - the competition may be less than normal. For those of you who have never entered, or wish to have a refresher on how, there will be a tutorial for entrants starting at 12:00 Noon.

If you have volunteered to help, or would like to help, you should report prior to 12:00.  There will be a lot of setup work to do to get ready for the Show and the Plant Sale on the following day.

Our Plant Sale area will be right in front of the Manor house.  Though we will be setting up for the sale on Saturday, it will actually begin on Sunday at 10:00 AM (9:00 AM if you are a Mass Hort member).  However, if you volunteer to help, among other perks you will have first crack at the plants Saturday PM after setup is complete.

Many other plant societies will also be set up on the lawn area in front of us.  Please make sure you save a few $$ to spend with your own society however!  We will have plants of all sizes, types and costs, from $5 plants on up, including:
- Special order Van Veen rhododendrons
- Briggs plants
- Fine Weston Nurseries hybrids
- This year's crop of Plants for Members (P4M) plants
- Hardy species, primary hybrids, and choice clones not available commercially
- Choice Perennials and native wildflowers

We will have the sales area staffed with knowledgeable Chapter members who can help you with your purchasing decisions.

The staff at Elm Bank will be running a tram Sunday to transport you and your purchases to/from the parking area to/from the show and sales area.

Attached below is the publicity broadcast sent out by Mass Hort to advertise the "Society Row Plant Sale" of which we are a part.

Hope to see you all this weekend!
