('Voluptuous' x 'Phipps Yellow') #3 is a Triploid

Rhododendron ('Voluptuous' x 'Phipps Yellow') #3, which is a Werner Brack hybrid, has been determined to be a triploid using flow cytometry by

In the case of triploid ('Voluptuous' x 'Phipps Yellow') #3, a diploid crossed with a diploid produced a triploid indicating that unreduced meiosis most likely occurred for one of the diploid parents. In other words, ('Voluptuous' x 'Phipps Yellow') #3 having 39 chromosomes most likely received 13 from one diploid parent and 26 chromosomes from the other diploid parent.

'Point Defiance' Descendant is a Diploid

A seedling of [('Voluptuous' x 'Point Defiance') #1] x ('Gold Medal' x 'Bud's Yellow'), which is a Werner Brack hybrid, has been determined to be a diploid using flow cytometry by

Three seedlings were ploidy tested from the Brack cross of 'Voluptuous' x 'Point Defiance'. 'Orange Leopard' and 'Stony Brook' tested as diploid. An unnamed seedling tested as triploid. This indicates that the offspring of a given cross can have different ploidy levels from one offspring to another.

The cross 'Voluptuous' x 'Point Defiance' and the cross [('Voluptuous' x 'Point Defiance') #1] x ('Gold Medal' x 'Bud's Yellow') producing diploid seedlings indicates that descendants of tetraploids can be diploids. 'Point Defiance' is a tetraploid.

When used as a seed parent, 'Horizon Monarch', which tested as a tetraploid using flow cytometry, has produced diploid as a well as tetraploid offspring.

Rhododendron 'Marinus Koster', which was determined to be a tetraploid, is the seed parent of the diploid 'Rendezvous'.

'Voluptuous' x 'Point Defiance' is a Triploid

A seedling of 'Voluptuous' x 'Point Defiance', which is a Werner Brack hybrid, has been determined to be a triploid using flow cytometry by

In other words, the triploid seedling having 39 chromosomes received 13 chromosomes from the diploid 'Voluptuous' and 26 chromosomes from the tetraploid 'Point Defiance'. Tetraploids usually contribute 26 chromosomes to their offspring.
