'Point Defiance' Descendant is a Diploid

A seedling of [('Voluptuous' x 'Point Defiance') #1] x ('Gold Medal' x 'Bud's Yellow'), which is a Werner Brack hybrid, has been determined to be a diploid using flow cytometry by

Dr. João Loureiro, Dr. Silvia Castro, José Cerca, and Mariana Castro
Plant Ecology and Evolution Group,
Centre for Functional Ecology,
Department of Life Sciences,
Faculty of Science and Technology,
University of Coimbra, Portugal.

Three seedlings were ploidy tested from the Brack cross of 'Voluptuous' x 'Point Defiance'. 'Orange Leopard' and 'Stony Brook' tested as diploid. An unnamed seedling tested as triploid. This indicates that the offspring of a given cross can have different ploidy levels from one offspring to another.

The cross 'Voluptuous' x 'Point Defiance' and the cross [('Voluptuous' x 'Point Defiance') #1] x ('Gold Medal' x 'Bud's Yellow') producing diploid seedlings indicates that descendants of tetraploids can be diploids. 'Point Defiance' is a tetraploid.

When used as a seed parent, 'Horizon Monarch', which tested as a tetraploid using flow cytometry, has produced diploid as a well as tetraploid offspring.

Rhododendron 'Marinus Koster', which was determined to be a tetraploid, is the seed parent of the diploid 'Rendezvous'.

Summary of Ploidy Levels

Sunday Chapter Meeting location

February Chapter Meeting on Sunday February 27 at Elm Bank in the EAST WING at 1:30.

Our meeting location has been moved to the East Wing, as the Putnam Building is still under repair.  Park in the main lot and go through the iron gates to the side door to the administration buildidng.

Susan DuBrava will give us a talk on "Hostas - the Funkier the Better."  She and her husband Chuck Dowdy (who is grounds supervisor for all of Northeastern University's properties) own Cochato Nursery in Holbrooke, MA.  In addition to specializing in hostas, they carry "unique trees and shrubs, native plants, shade perennials, alpine and trough-type  plants".  The website is www.cochatonursery.com and is being updated as we speak for spring.  Hope to see you there.

Rhododendron subulatum China is a Diploid

5 plants of Rhododendron subulatum from China growing at the Arnold Arboretum has been determined to be a diploid using flow cytometry by

Dr. João Loureiro, Dr. Silvia Castro, José Cerca, and Mariana Castro
Plant Ecology and Evolution Group,
Centre for Functional Ecology,
Department of Life Sciences,
Faculty of Science and Technology,
University of Coimbra, Portugal.

Rhododendron subulatum was formerly classified as subspecies of Ledum palustre.

The 5 plants of Rhododendron subulatum tested as diploid were from northern China.

A Rhododendron tomentosum wild collected from a marsh in Turku Archipelago, Finland tested as tetraploid.

There is a very good chance that this difference in ploidy level is due to misidentification of the plant from China due to the large group of plants formerly included under Ledum palustre and then compounded when the Ledum genus was moved to Rhododendron.

The plant from China is clearly a diploid "Ledum". The origin of the plant tested is well documented. This plant is still growing at the Arnold Arboretum along with 4 of its siblings.

January Newsletter

Here is the electronic February postcard (not a full newsletter this month).  Hope to see  you at the February Chapter Meeting on Sunday February 27 at Elm Bank in the Putnam Building at 1:30.

We lost our scheduled speaker from the Hosta Society, who moved out of state to take a new job.  She has promised us a replacement, but we don't have a name yet.  The topic should still be hostas.
And we can all use some nice lush pictures of growing plants that are not bowed down by snow or buried in ice, can't we?
