Portland Chapter Plant Sale

May 10 and 11, 2008

Rhododendron Show and Plant Sale. The American Rhododendron Society, Portland Chapter, presents its annual Rhododendron Show and Plant Sale today and tomorrow, 9 till 5, at the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, S.E. 28th, across from Reed College and a block north of Woodstock Boulevard. Adult admission $3. This is a judged show, featuring cut trusses representing a variety of rhododendrons, plus a plant sale filled with favorites and unusual specimens. This internationally-recognized Portland City Garden is now in its peak bloom, and is a photographer’s dream, with waterfalls, fountains, and vistas of blooming rhododendrons and azaleas. The garden itself is open daily dawn till dusk. For information, call 503/771-8386.

Things Rhododendron and Horses

Read an article on the toxic nature of the Rhododendron family.

Toxin

Note: All azaleas are rhododendrons. An image of a rhododendron and not an azalea is featured on the site referenced above. In general dogs and cats show little interest in eating rhododendrons. Rabbits do seem to enjoy azaleas in the winter months. Deer do eat rhododendrons when they are low on food.

Things Rhododendron and Clay Fairies

By Andrea Damewood
The Register-Guard

"Perching in branches, peeking at passers-by, countless fairies have taken up residence in Hendricks Park in Eugene, Oregon.

The small clay and pipe cleaner figurines appear each spring — perhaps some sort of mythical creature migration — nestling into rhododendrons and making homes in azaleas, park regulars say."
