MCARS P4M

The date given to the Newsletter for P4M's Big Sale was wrong.  It will take place on Saturday May 10 .  All the other information was correct.

To encourage you to go I have paraphrased some enticing facts announced at the Chapter meeting last Sunday:

There are lots of nice new plants.  Sally Perkins mentioned that they potted up about 800 plants; about 160 different varieties.  Donors and P4M members will get the full list early and will be able to pre-order.  Other folks will see the official list a few days later.  It will soon be uploaded onto the chapter blog.    rosebayblog.blogspot.com

John Perkins said there are a lot of leftovers from last year and Mike has some good plants.  We also have fifty to sixty larger plants that have been grown on for two years.  Quite a few of those will be brought up to our show.

10:00 am the sale is open to donors and participants

12:00 pm the sale is open to everybody

Van Veen and RSF Plant Distribution

Reminder:  Pickup for your Van Veen and/or Rhodo Species Foundation plant order is this Saturday, April 19 between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM at Willard Hunnewell's barn in Wellesley.  Complete details can be found in the last two Newsletters.

Volunteers should come to the barn between 9 - 9:30 AM

I will have extra Van Veen plants available for sale during the pickup period.  I'll have a very small number of extra RSF plants for sale, including one "Alpine macabeanum", which is reported to be much hardier than the usual low altitude type.

A sandwich board saying "Van Veen Distribution" will be on the road at the entrance to the Hunnewell driveway, plus additional signs along the driveway to guide you to the barn.

MCARS Display Garden news

PAYTON MEMORIAL GARDEN AT ELM BANK – VOLUNTEERS NEEDEd

 

Our public display garden at Elm Bank (the home of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society) is now 11 years old and is by most accounts a mature garden.  The Chapter has worked hard at making this the best garden that we can for generating public interest in rhododendrons.  The Garden Design Committee will be meeting in April to decide on plant replacements and new additions.  As you see in this newsletter our Open Garden meeting will be held in late April and we will be trying to get the early maintenance work completed before that event.  In order to accomplish this, the Maintenance Committee needs your help.  We have scheduled 3 work parties in April on the following dates:

                                                Monday, 4/7 (providing the snow is gone)

                                                Saturday, 4/12

                                                Saturday, 4/26

 

All 3 days we will be in the garden from 9:30 am until 12:30 pm.  Please join us for one, two, or all three of the days if you can.  Coffee and donuts will be served and there will be plenty for everyone to do.  If you are experienced we need your input, and if you are a beginner this is a great opportunity to meet and work beside your fellow Chapter members.  And you will have contributed to one of our missions, which is to educate the public on the genus rhododendron.

If you can let me know that you are coming over on any day it makes it easier for me to plan the work and the refreshments.  Also I can then let you know if we cancel due inclement weather.  You can contact me as follows:

 Also, if you think that you might be able to help out later in the spring and summer let me know and I will add you name to my email listing.  This does not entail any obligation but I will let you know in advance what days we will be performing ongoing maintenance in case you have a free day.  We usually perform this work on either Saturday or Wednesday mornings.

p4M dates

Cancel March 8th not needed. 

April 26th is "the sort" for P4M and hope to bring plants up for the chapter meeting the next day. 

Sale will be May 10th and we expect the truss show and sale to be the May 17-18 time frame.

MCARS January Newsletter

Here is our first Newsletter of the new year, announcing our January program for Sunday January 26 at 1:30pm in the Putnam Building at Elm Bank. Come hear the Perkins and see their gorgeous pictures of 2 conventions -a good diversion for January. (I do have to mention that at the moment January is 56F, pouring rain and we just had a huge clap of thunder!).

As our next Chapter meeting will be Sunday, March 2 , there will be no meeting in February.

Van Veen and Rhodo Species Order

If you are planning to submit an order to me for plants from Van Veen, or species for a group order to the Rhodo Species Foundation, please remember that the deadline is the end of this month (12/31).

Note that I do have enough species orders to make the group order a go, so if you were holding off on this, please go ahead and send me your order.
