Rare Opportunity for Great Rhododendrons at rock bottom prices

To Mass Chapter Members,

Our chapter has been presented with a rare opportunity.  As many of you may know, Weston Nurseries in Hopkinton is changing their business model.  In the future, they will be contracting with third parties to grow many of their plants to salable size.  They are discontinuing their own production of these plants from small starts.  However, they already had some of these plants in the pipeline, and now do not need them.  Wayne Mezitt, owner of Weston Nurseries has very generously offered these plants to our Chapter at very reasonable prices.  This presents us with a rare opportunity to obtain some of Weston's best introductions at prices you will find irresistible.  This is a one-time only opportunity.  Once these plants are sold, there will be no more at this size and price.  Though supplies for some selections should be sufficient, supplies of others are limited.  First come first serve on reserving them.

These plants were bred in and for the New England climate and should perform exceptionally well for you.

Types, Prices and sizes are as follows:
Small Leaved Rhododendrons (Lepidotes):
All hardy in Zone 5 or lower.
These are robust plants, 1 to 2 feet high in 4" pots.  Some look to be 3 years old.
Price: $3.50 each;  $3.00 each for 3 or more.

Weston's Aglo (similar to Olga) pink
Weston's Pink Diamond - double pink, early
PJM Elite - a select clone of PJM, more towards pink than "typical" PJM.
Weston's Crescendo - Pink flowers that darken with age
Molly Fordham - white flowers, a week after PJM

Evergreen Azaleas:
All hardy in Zone 5.
These plants are smaller than the prior set, and so is the price:  $3.00 each;  $2.50 each for 3 or more.

Bixby - Compact plant, Dark red flowers
Pink Clusters - dwarf plant, ruffled, bright pink flowers
Pink Discovery - Clear pink flowers

Deciduous Azaleas:
All hardy in Zone 5 or lower.  Most are summer bloomers, except where noted.  Most (all?) are fragrant.  Most were selected for leaf mildew resistance, as well as their other attributes.

Price:  Larger plants, $3.50 each, $3.00 each for 3 or more

prunifolium hybrids - yellow to orange.
calendulaceum - orange/yellow, a superb native of the east coast, Appalachians

Following deciduous azaleas are smaller than the above.
Price: Smaller plants, $3.00 each;  $2.50 each for 3 or more.

Red Salute
Bonbon - pink flowers with a rich fragrance in June. Bluish green mildew resistant foliage turns bronze in fall
Pennsylvania - light pink flowers with an orange eye
Framingham - peach & pink
Golden Showers
Pink & Sweet
Jane Abbot - pink, blooms in May, extremely fragrant
Weston's Sparkler - Ruffled, dark pink flowers
Popcorn - white with yellow flair

To order:  Email me the following:
full name
address
phone number
Number and type of plant.  Note discounts for 3 or more of the same type.

Plant pickup will be at my house Saturday, June 13 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.  Instructions & details will follow.  If you wish to order plants but cannot pick up on this date or get a friend to do so, let me know and we can discuss possible alternate arrangements.  Please consult Weston's catalog or do a Web search for more info on any given cultivar - info can be found for all of these selections on the Web.

Remember, first come, first served.

Rhododendron Show: Additional Information

HOW TO SELECT A TRUSS

The following advice on preparing a truss for showing was written in 1983 by Evie Cowles for the Newsletter, and reprinted in 1991 by request.  It is still one of the best guides for successful showing we have ever published, and it is reprinted here for our newer members.

A Truss Show - How to Select and Care For Entries

Perfect condition is essential.  This means healthy, unblemished foliage to set off the florets.  If you think of the leaves as a frame for a picture, you will appreciate how insect bites or browning reduces aesthetic appeal.  The large-leaved variety, ideally, is presented as a truss sitting on a perfect circle of leaves.
Blossoms should be open, but not over-mature.  One with a still-closed bud is preferable to another with florets on the point of dropping.  This particularly applies to the selection of azaleas.  As with most cut flowers, rhododendrons benefit from a hardening-off period.  Cutting them the day before the show and setting them in water up to their necks in a cold, draft-free spot helps prevent wilting during the show.  Before they are placed on display, it's a good idea to make a fresh cut of the stem base.  If a heavy rain is predicted before the show, cut your perfect trusses and extend this for a few days.

Very early varieties can be shown out of season if they have been kept in cold storage.  The truss is stored dry in a sealed plastic bag in a refrigerator until the day before the show.  (It is also helpful to inflate the bag by blowing air into it, as if it were a balloon.  This will prevent the plastic from damaging the tissues of the truss).

The stem is trimmed before plunging it in lukewarm water for at least twenty-four hours.
All the care in the world up to this point is useless if the trusses are bashed en route to the show.  For a short drive, it's fine to lay them in shallow boxes.  For a longer distance, it's better to put them upright in water in pop bottles or cans that are braced to prevent tipping or crowding.

Be venturesome!  Let's have lots of Exhibitors!  We'll all enjoy the show more that way - and discover the beauty of some new plants we will want to add to our own collections in the near future.

Tim Craig added at the time of the 1991 reprint:

It was also suggested by Evie that anyone having a truss of an unusual or particularly beautiful variety, even if the foliage is in poor condition, bring the truss to place it on "the conversation table" (where all late entries will be displayed) for all of us to see and admire.  Many times, your newest plants are still quite small so that if gypsy moths or weevils chew the foliage, there are not a lot of other trusses to choose from - and these are the very cultivars which everyone is eager to see "in the flesh".
Class 27, flower arrangements featuring rhododendrons, should have more entries.  Your plants are constantly getting older and larger, so that you should be willing to cut a few branches and trusses for an arrangement.  Be creative!  Put together a few trusses of your rhodies with some other foliage which you have in abundance.

Rhododendron Events

The following Rhododendron events are coming up shortly:

1. Early Truss Show & Display Garden Party – Tomorrow, May 3, at Elm Bank

2. Plants for Members (P4M) Sale - May 9, Planeview Nursery, Portsmouth, RI

1. Early Truss Show & Display Garden Party – Tomorrow, May 3, at Elm Bank

Tomorrow will be our early truss show, a little later than some years.  Truss registration begins at 1:00 PM and judging starts at 2:00 PM.  We are expecting to see a good turnout of small-leaved rhododendron trusses, and possibly some of the large leaved types.  Please walk your garden today and take a few trusses with you to tomorrow's event to share with your fellow members.  See the most recent chapter Newsletter for details.

A number of volunteers have worked hard over the past couple of months to bring our Display Garden into tip top shape for this event.  Attached is a photo of the volunteers that helped out at a recent work day.  We should see a lot of color in the garden tomorrow.

2. Plants for Members (P4M) Sale - May 9, 1:00 PM, Planeview Nursery, Portsmouth, RI

This sale presents a great opportunity to try many of your fellow member's favorite plants, which have been rooted by Chapter members over the past year.  Some of my oldest and best plants came from P4M.  There are many new varieties available this year, as well as some old standbys.  The price can't be beat - $3 per plant.  Below is a link to this year's list of available plants.  Paste it into your browser if it will not work here:  http://arsmc.org/Documents/donorworker2009.htm.

This list can also be accessed via our Chapter Website:  www.arsmc.org  Click on Library.
