PAYTON MEMORIAL GARDEN AT ELM BANK – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

This note is being sent on behalf of Pete Littlefield.

PAYTON MEMORIAL GARDEN AT ELM BANK – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our public display garden at Elm Bank (the home of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society) is now 5 years old and is well on its way to becoming a mature garden.  The Chapter has worked hard at making this the best garden that we can for generating public interest in rhododendrons.  The Garden Design Committee met in March and has suggested several new rhododendrons, shrubs, and ground covers to be added to the garden this spring.  As you see in this newsletter our April Chapter meeting will be held on the 29th at Elm Bank and we would like to have as much of the new planting, as well as needed maintenance work, completed prior to that date.  In order to accomplish this the Maintenance Committee needs your help.  We have scheduled 3 work parties in April on the following dates:

                                                Saturday, 4/7

                                                Sunday, 4/15

                                                Thursday, 4/26

All 3 days we will be in the garden from 9 am until noon.  Please join us for one, two, or all three of the days if you can.  Coffee and donuts will be served and there will be plenty for everyone to do.  If you are experienced we need your input, and if you are a beginner this is a great opportunity to meet and work beside your fellow chapter members.  And you will have contributed to one of our missions, which is to educate the public on the genus rhododendron.

If you would like to participate but cannot make one of the scheduled work days please contact us and we will arrange to meet you at the garden when you are available (Jim Aplin and I spend most of our waking hours in the garden anyway J).

If you can help, and we really hope that you can, please let me know so that we can plan for tools, refreshments, etc.  You can contact me as follows:

Open Gardens 2007 - Email Address Correction

This is being sent on behalf of Susan Clark

In the most recent Newsletter in the article on Open Gardens, a critical '.' mysteriously disappeared from Cookie Littlefield's email address.  Cookie is orchestrating the list of open gardens this spring and if you plan to respond to her electronically, please use her correct address, which has a '.' between the words 'woodland' and 'gardener'.  The correct address is woodland.gardener@verizon.net  We hope many of you will generously open your gardens for chapter visitors and you will need the correct address.

2007 P4M List will be Posted in April

After the April P4M sort where we inventory what rhododendrons have
actually rooted, a list of P4M plants available for the May P4M sale
and distribution will be posted on this blog.

This sale is open to all Chapter members and the public where P4M
donors and workers are given first preference. Plants are in limited
supply this year so the 2007 September Chapter Meeting and Plant Sale
may well not include P4M plants.

Plan to attend the P4M sale this May.

Three Great Rhododendrons Recommended by Us for Your New England Garden

Based on a request from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the
American Rhododendron Society Massachusetts Chapter recommends 'Ogla
Mezitt', 'Weston's Innocence', and 'Mist Maiden' to be 3 of the very
best Rhododendrons for New England. Try these in addition to the New
England standards of 'Scintillation' and 'PJM'.
