Van Veen Plant Sale
As a reminder, please email me your Van Veen order by December 20.
Here are a few suggested selections from this year's list for those of you who are new to this program and/or are wondering what you should select. They are listed by categories, with some really belong in more than one category. All of these selections have done very well for me in my Zone 6a garden. A few photos appear at the end.
Proven Performers - plants that have shown themselves to not only do well in most zones in
· Janet Blair – great foliage and a truss that is among the most pleasing.
· Scintillation – Similar to Janet Blair. Some prefer Janet Blair over Scintillation. I prefer the latter for the glossy foliage, though Janet tends to retain its leaves better.
· Mist Maiden – One of the best, very hardy foliage plants with trusses that open pink and fade to white over time (like most "yak" hybrids). This and Scintillation are dominant plants in our garden.
· Ken Janek – similar to Mist Maiden, but a little more robust growing.
· Ruth Davis – another yak cross that hasn't gotten a lot of publicity. Its flowers are much like Mist Maiden. Its foliage is an incredibly dark green color.
Flowers – plants whose outstanding feature is their flowers
· Grace Seabrook & Taurus – both are outstanding reds. My Taurus bloomed for the first time last year, and it lived up to its reputation. Both may show some leaf damage and perhaps some blasted buds in a Zone 5 winter. Mine have been fine the past few years.
· Percy Wiseman – Pink in bud, Flowers open a peachy yellow, change to pink and fade to a lighter color over time. This hybrid does very well for me in my well drained soil. Not recommended if you have heavy soil unless amended and well drained.
· Cupcake – has a slight peachy look to the flowers. Reportedly not hardy in my zone, but I've had no problems. I suggest giving this one a try. Indumented foliage and attractive flowers – what more could you want?
·
Foliage Plants – these plants bloom too of course, but they are known more for their 52 weeks/year foliage display. These are my personal favorites. All do well in our Zone 6a garden.
· Neat-o – incredible red/orange indumentum, deep green foliage, and typical species looking trusses (pink fade to white). While this plant has shown a little foliage damage in harsh winters, it soon hides any damaged leaves with new growth. This hybrid has won best in show in our foliage show (possibly more than once?)
· Yak Exbury – like all yak selections, this has outstanding foliage and flowers.
· Cinnamon Bear & Teddy Bear – Bureavii hybrids that have proven to be excellent performers. Among the best foliage plants I have, with heavy rusty indumentum. New growth is frosted with white tomentum.
· Mardi Gras – This is a crossover plant with both fantastic foliage and flowers. Everyone should have at least one of these (I have 3).
· Golfer – fantastic sugar frosted new foliage. The upper surface of the new leaves is covered with a white tomentum that lasts well into the summer. Protected branches will carry this frosting into the next year. Relatively slow grower.
Unusual Plants – plants that have less common features that make them stand out from the croud
·
· Phyllis Korn – a polyploid with the heavy substance look that often goes with that. A show winner. Mine has not yet bloomed, but I always drool over the trusses brought to our flower shows. The foliage is very nice. May suffer damage in colder zones.
There are a few dozen other plants in the list that I would recommend for various reasons, including Atroflo, Babylon, Grumpy, April Mist, April Snow, Ginny Gee, Mary Fleming, kiusianum, adenopodum, and most of the yak hybrids. I suggest you use the websites I provided in my first email to look at the flowers and foliage to assist with your decisions.

Van Veen Plant Order List & Instructions
Following are instructions for ordering Van Veen plants for April, 2013 distribution.
Instructions are also included in the second tab of the attached spreadsheet.
Please use the attached spreadsheet to order your plants.
If you cannot open the spreadsheet, contact me for an alternative.Send me your order to me by December 20, 2012 at the latest.
Instructions
· Submit your order to me via E-mail to jpbruso@aol.com listing:
o Plant Names
o Quantity of each plant type
· Plant Size - This year each plant variety will be available in one of two sizes:
o Small – these are the usual "Liner" size that we normally get from Van Veen.
o Medium – these are a year or more older than the Small size, and consequently larger.
Each plant variety is available in only small or medium size, not both. Size available for any type is indicated by the Number Available in the Small or Medium column in the plant list. When you order a plant, you will get the one size available for that plant.
· Include the following information with your order:
o Your Name
o Full Mailing Address
o Phone Number
o Whether you would like to help with the sorting & distribution.
· Prices: These are listed at the top of the order list, by Plant Type and Size.
· Shipping & packing materials: This year these costs are included in the per-plant price listed at the top of the plant list.
· Return the Order to me by 12/20/12. Send no money until you receive the order confirmation & invoice from me. The invoices will be sent after the first of the year based on confirmation of plant availability from Van Veen. The plants will be available for pickup in April. Notification of the pickup date will be provided with the invoices and in the Newsletter.
· There is a 2 plant minimum order per plant variety for the Mass Chapter group order as a whole. You don't necessarily have to order 2 per variety yourself in order to receive the plant, since if others order the same variety, the minimum will be met. However, to increase your chances of getting a particular type you really desire, especially if it isn't one of the more popular varieties, you may want to order two yourself.
Following are sources of information & photos of plants in the order list:
1. Van Veen Official Website: http://www.vanveennursery.com/
2. Hirsutum Rhododendron Database: http://www.hirsutum.info/
3. Greer's Guidebook to Available Rhododendrons.
4. Rhododendron Hybrids by Sally & Greer
Notes to newer members:
Program Overview
· Each year, the Massachusetts Chapter submits a group order to Van Veen Nurseries of Portland Oregon, a wholesale grower, to take advantage of a volume discount & high-quality plants.
· These plants are mostly yearlings from rooted cuttings. These are high quality plants at an excellent price. They arrive un-potted and need to be simply potted up or planted into a "nursery" area for ease of watering the first 1-2 years.
· Many plants have a limited supply and will be distributed on a first-ordered first-served basis, so there is an advantage to mailing your order early (the postmark date governs).
For lists of plants that will do exceptionally well in our area, I suggest you refer to our chapter's "Proven Performers" list.
· A primer on how to successfully raise small plants to landscape size will be available during the distribution.
Volunteers are needed to assist in sorting plants and filling orders. This requires spending a couple hours on Saturday morning. If you are able to help, please let me know when you send your order.
If you have any questions please call me at 508-435-8217 (evenings and weekends) or E-Mail me at jpbruso@aol.com

ARSMC Founders' Day reminder
PAPA RAZZI RESTAURANT WELLESLEY MA
Cost: $30 per person Reservations required
Reservations: make out your check to ARSMC and send it to:
Pete Littlefield, 17 Walden Way, Milford, MA 01757 (508.473.4313 email woodland.gardener@verizon.net)
FDEADLINE FOR RESERVATIONS FRIDAY NOVEMBER 2 E
We must give the restaurant the number of attendees before the brunch, so be sure to get your checks & reservations in to Pete Littlefield by the deadline.
We will have our brunch again at the Wellesley Papa Razzi at 16 Washington St., Wellesley, at 11:30. Papa Razi is just off Route 128 (I-95) at Route 16, heading west. The menu, like last year's, sounds delicious: fresh fruit platter, assorted breakfast breads, green salad, chicken, pasta, scrambled eggs, bacon, roasted vegetables, and coffee and tea.
Our Dick Brooks Memorial Speaker this year is Stephen Krebs, Director of the Holden Arboretum's David G. Leach Research Station, a satellite facility maintained for horticultural research on a 30-acre property in Madison, Ohio. The Leach Station is staffed and equipped to support extensive and diverse display gardens, in addition to large breeding populations and research plots. The station remains committed to breeding and evaluating superior rhododendrons for continental climates (i.e. cold winters and hot summers). In addition, the traditional breeding program is complemented by a research component focused on adaptations of rhododendrons to biotic and abiotic stresses, such as winter freezing injury to leaves and buds, 'bleaching' of leaves (photoinhibition) under excessive light, and diseases caused by fungal pathogens (Phytophthora root rot and powdery mildew). Sally Perkins assures us that Steve is a dynamic speaker and great rhodie expert!
We will also have our annual Seed Exchange. John Perkins has taken on the mantle of selecting and producing the Cross of the Year. If you have seed to contribute to the exchange, bring your labeled contributions in paper or glassine bags, not plastic bags [thanks Joe Bruso for emphasizing that].
